She’s getting so big!…I need a camera!
Okay…coming from our house, did you ever think you’d hear those words?…”I need a camera!!” With Jon’s profession, at our house, a camera is never far away, but the more I watch my baby grow and look through pictures from my friends and family of their own kids getting bigger and cuter and more and more fun, I just want to capture Hannah now and then without the production of Jon’s profession. I don’t need the 10-Mega-pixel-double-battery-pack-specialty-lens-and-bracket-added-flash that is what makes him competitive as a wedding photographer. Point-and-shoot is all I need. Of course, I’d like there to be as little lag-time between when I push my finger down and when the photo snaps as possible, but aside from that, I’d settle for just about anything.
Well, I had a brainstorm! I have several little gift cards from Macy’s. I get kick-backs of a sort from work, and I don’t normally shop at Macy’s, so they’ve piled up to quite an amount. Why not buy a simple camera from Macy’s and pretty much get it for free?! I posed the idea to Jon, and he sputtered. Of course he sounds like an angry father laying down the law…If there’s going to be a camera in MY HOUSE… He had quite a few rules that this camera had to conform with, and sadly, Macy’s only offers three or four cameras total online, and after visiting two of the local malls we found out that they don’t carry ANY in person. Ugh. One of the options online was actually a video camera with still picture capabilities…AND it’s a Canon! That’s what Jon shoots with for his weddings. I had such high hopes! We visited review sites and product information pages, and they all sounded pretty good with the caviat that they were, “personal cameras” and not professional. I tried to reason with Jon that I was alright with this camera, it would only cost us $20 after using all my gift cards, and he didn’t ever have to use it. Of course, he looked at me like I had gone mad. A techno toy in the house that he wouldn’t be using?! Was I serious?! Of COURSE he was going to use it…that’s why it had to be a good one! Otherwise, it would drive him nuts.
Okay…but buying a bigger better camera anywhere else is going to be a WHOLE lot more expensive than the $20 at Macy’s online…and then a bigger better camera isn’t the point-and-shoot idea this all started with. Heck, for $20 it’s worth buying it just to test it out, since none of the stores had an actual product for us to look at. If you don’t like it after testing it, we can eBay the thing for nearly it’s full value making a tidy profit in cash that doesn’t have to be spent at Macy’s. Okay?
Well…we’ll see. We’re still in talks, but I have a feeling that Jon will visit a couple of camera stores in the next few days to see if he can hold a sample before agreeing to buy. Wish me luck. My baby is getting older every minute and I’m still unable to capture her amazing cuteness!

Jon, dear – let Lori get a camera that she can keep in her purse, and it won’t be a big deal if it gets dropped or scratched. A happy mommy makes a happy daddy! Trust me on this one!
Lori – bookmark woot.com and check it every day. It’s a techno website that sells only one thing, for only one day. They often have great cameras for awesome prices. My camera happens to be a Canon, and I love it, but I also had a Kodak that I loved and was very easy to use. I see the Kodaks on there a lot. Good luck!
P.S. Jon – Remember that Lori’s b-day is coming up!
Good luck! Jon is a great photographer. But I think I would go crazy not being able to document every little thing that happens on my own schedule.
